Venezuela 2026: what will change?

For those who vote in favor of a democratic transition that is funded by the administration and the will of the people, Trump's proposal is disappointing.

After a nasty military coup, Nicolas Maduro ended his usurpation of the Venezuelan presidency in the early hours of January 3. The door to regime change is open.

What happened in Venezuela is an endless crisis, an absolute destruction of the modernization built in the 20th century.Even the authoritarianism of that century was modernized. This is not a case of Chavismo-Madurismo, which Hugo Chávez sold as a project to deepen democracy, but it is anti-development, anti-democratic, anti-Western tyranny and against almost all the values that have been instilled in the people since the 19th century. They call it a revolution and what it is: from our modern and hopeful country to one of the poorest, most violent, unequal and directionless on the continent.

However, it is not our only problem, this reality is our biggest challenge to open the door to the democratic bridge.Venezuela is a laboratory where the needs and reforms of the international community can be seen in the relations of the modern world.Nicolás Maduro and his civil-military campaign to contact the mining mafia, Colombian guerillaod, terrorists of the Middle East, organized crime, drugs and autocracy, want to force the world controlled by local governments to their work.

With the presidency of Donald Trump, the United States joins these developing autocratic and imperial tendencies. As soon as the tyrant Maduro was arrested, he made it clear that he wants to get what he deserves.it is, with Maduro's vice president and the Chavista-Madurista bureaucracy under his orders.A protectorate then.

So the transition presents a bumpy, unstable, conflictual path, even with our international allies.According to Trump, the winners of the July 28, 2024 election do not yet have the respect or sufficient support to take over the political leadership of the transition. However, what happened in the early hours of January 3rd was largely the result of the previous and selfless efforts and sacrifices of both Venezuelans and democratic governments, institutions and a plural universe of regional and international actors.

Maduro's departure caused the authoritarian and criminal power structure to weaken but remain intact.Edmundo González and María Corina Machado face an enormous challenge.Different ideas about how to lead society towards its well-being seem insurmountable. The United States seems to support the continuation of chavismo-madurismo, under the leadership of Trump, assuming that to stabilize the country requires the same actors who rob and degrade society. It seems to believe that chavismo-madurismo can be controlled.

For those of us who vote for a democratic transition led by a government invested in the will of the people, Trump's proposal is abhorrent. It will be a transition from Chavismo-Madurismo to an authoritarian form with an economy dependent on the United States. It remains to be seen how this option will develop in the coming days.Freedom for all political prisoners is a sign of the regime's will to reform.

Today, the democratic opposition led by Machado is in a strong position to press for changes that satisfy the democratic will and the economic structure of the people. But they must face great difficulties at times to stop and at other times to dissolve the deadly forces attached to the Maduro government.A group of ordinary and civilian soldiers, supported by the main criminals, will try to maintain themselves at all costs.

This task involves wisdom and dialogue, the ability to negotiate, flexibility and pressure from leadership, civil society and ordinary citizens to enforce their decisions and aspirations. Not much has been done on this yet and now will be the key.The top priority is to create coalitions that strengthen Venezuelans from the bottom up so that they guarantee the decisions that the government and the country must make to return the country to the path of democracy and peace.

Our problems show the dangers and possible ways of humanity in the 21st century. The Venezuelan democratic opposition that has shown, under the leadership of the current leaders, especially the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, courage, intelligence and strategic ability to overcome injustice in the field of democracy, is now facing new challenges. It must use the power to negotiate with the powerful Tyrians and Trojans, the independent government desired by the majority of the country. And, at the same time, it is necessary to generate new movements that motivate the people to do and accompany the transitional government in its work.
