Final Fantasy VII: Remake Analysis Integrated into Nintendo Switch 2, the prodigal son returns home
After five years of console exclusivity, the game is leaving PlayStation territory to reach the shores of Nintendo and Xbox.
You may not remember. But there was a time before Silksong where the anxiety and anticipation of eternally postponed games existed. That's why E3 2015 was so important, memes that had accumulated over the years melted like sugar at the Sony gala in Los Angeles. That morning (Spanish time) not a single name or two were announced. But three announcements have been dreamed of for over a decade: Shenmue 3, The Last Guardian, and Final Fantasy VII Remake. We assure you, it's practically impossible to sleep through the night.
Final Fantasy VII Remake finally arrived in the dystopian 2020, and it won over the critics and the public. It made it as the first part of an ongoing triptych and as a Sony exclusive. The first detail was important, of course, because it meant dealing with an unfinished story, but the second was extremely symbolic. The original game marked the "betrayal" of Nintendo's Square after all previous installments were released on Nes and Supernes.Impossible to do in the limited space provided by the cartridges of the future Nintendo 64, the game became the flagship of the first PlayStation in 1997 (and finally, the jrpg spear in the West). And although we've been remastering for a long time on Switch, the arrival of this remake on Switch 2 (and Xbox Series) means that it removes a thorn in the side.Almost 30 years later, the prodigal son returns home.
Given that the game on Switch 2 is, apart from some controversial additions, the same one that was released on PlayStation consoles, in this text we will try to add new elements to what was already exposed in the wonderful analysis we published at the time (where you find everything related to the story, mechanics and gameplay).of the last almost 30 years we will use the Remake itself and the perspective it offers us, precisely, the time that has passed in relation to the release of the original.
Final Fantasy VII и A Legend of Time
Square Enix was brave to take on this massive project.Five years after the Remake's arrival, we're still halfway there, with a brilliant Rebirth that only makes us hope for the best ending, which could easily have come in 2028. The path was clear, but like a cover letter, Final Fantasy VII Remake has complicated it.It contains the memories and expectations of an entire generation and ours as well.i knew things like this were more likely to go wrong (yes, i'm looking at you, "Star Wars").And he did it boldly, expanding and redefining.Respecting the source, but don't be afraid to innovate.Put your heart into it, but never lose your mind.
It's funny how the original story of Final Fantasy VII fits so much better than the uncertain present we have to live in today. We embrace ecological power to protect their planet. Representation of the omnipresent corporations that control society and history. The constant sexual tension that forced us to stimulate our imaginations due to the limited digital representation of the human figure in the mid-90s, showing incredible and carefree sexual freedom, is now present in character modeling, contorted movements, darts with winks. It manifests itself in spicy expressions and obscene gestures that work like (we're not just three fans). But it's also flirting with secondary characters like Avalanche's partner Jesse; Madame M, the owner of the massage parlor; Andreas the King of the Bees; or Don Corneo, the capricious and perverted)
And well, between the weirdness, the comedy, and the sex, the long epic and deep intimacy stays true.Sacrifice, death, friendship, memories, childhood traumas, responsibility and commitment to important decisions, the loss of a ship drifting in a desperate search to reach port... If all of this is wrapped up in a luxurious reinterpretation of one of the best soundtracks ever composed for any medium, we have this gift, Finalakesy VII.
The Switch 2 version and why we should not be surprised by the result
Let's say for now and be honest: the port of Final Fantasy VII: Remake on Switch 2 is excellent. On the one hand, we have the standard material that includes an expansion that includes the taglines of Integrade (launching on PS5 in June 2021): Yuffie's mid-episode, improved textures and shadows, ambient lighting, visual optimization options, photo mode, etc.We also have the controversial Optimized Progression. Ultimate Access option (unreduced health, permanent damage up to 9999...) which did not sit well with the long-standing community. Complications will come to PC and Sony consoles later via a free update.
The details mentioned (such as the light treatment, which now has more body, favoring the environment and immersion) already make the Switch 2 version better than the original PS4.Where it falls short is the 1620p resolution that the game has on the PS4 Pro. The hybrid has 2K in the port, gets resolution in portable mode via DLSS from the original's 720-756p.On the other hand, motion is stable and locked at 30 fps. This happens even in stressful moments like combat, where we see a celebration of particles, fast movement and strong photography on screen.
Quality can be measured by the expression of the hair.Sounds crazy, but it's an important workhorse (not hair, huh). These problems exist in the 1970s of the Star Wars heroes Outlaws or the various views of the vast population of Night City in Cyberpunk 2077 (both are inevitable exits, it must be said).Or the unspeakably cruel horse Don Corneau.
Without detracting from the excellent results, we should not be surprised by the quality of this port, since we are talking about a game from 5 years ago, made for PS4 and with a level design that, although very full of detail in its setting, is very linear. And in terms of scenarios, the game introduces many moments where it hides its cargo, such as paths to cross, opening some doors, elevators or, most importantly, narrow passages to cross slowly. This, which is more common in other cases where memory access is slower, is overkill, considering this is the latest batch of games on PS4.
Therefore, the real challenge will be the rebirth, not to mention the conclusion of the trilogy, which is now in development. It will be when we stand before something great, created for the current generation and the way is open to examples. The experience Square Enix gained at the time and the management that is starting to explore its potential should yield good results. For now, let's enjoy the beginning of this unique journey.
Square Enix provided us with a Final Fantasy VII Remake embed code to complete this review. The images that accompany the text were taken during our game.
Although less flashy than the bright and spacious Rebirth, given that Midgard is straight, industrial, nocturnal and full of places where the underprivileged survive in houses made of scraps, the Remake shines because of its re-creation of the first action of Final Fantasy VII.The Switch 2 version continues with flying colors, with 2K resolution in docked mode, DLSS upscaling from 720–756p to 1080p in mobile mode and a rocky 30 fps locked.Edition this, finally, is better than the original PS4 version and the results that we usually find on the Steam Deck. The duality of TV / laptop makes this new incarnation the best way to enjoy this modern classic. The quality achieved is not surprising, since it is a game with several years behind it, made for the previous generation. In that sense, we look forward to seeing how the next chapter behaves in Nintendo's hybrid. That will be a real challenge that, we hope, will match the beauty of the first part of this beautiful triptych.
- An excellent release of the integrated version, which is already superior to the original from 2020.
- The TV/laptop combo makes this option the best way to enjoy the game.
- Very stable performance at close to 30 fps.
- An unrivaled principle that will be the basis for the following chapters, more technically demanding.
- We believe that the Switch 2 can reproduce the 4K that is not available on the TV.
- In portable mode, sometimes we have the feeling that the resolution has decreased.
- Tons of hidden gear that was already too big for the latest PS4 batch title at the time.
